Acrylic Coating in Mumbai

Acrylic coating is a water-based protective and decorative coating offering good UV stability and colour retention with moderate flexibility. It is widely used as an external finish coat over prepared and primed masonry where appearance matters alongside weather protection.

When this is the right system — and when it is not

Waterproofing is a selection problem before it is an application problem. Most failures we are called to fix were the wrong system for the substrate, not a bad product.

When this is the right choice

SURFACE PREPARATION

Almost every failure starts here

Preparation produces nothing visible, costs real money, and is the first thing removed from a cheap quotation. It is also what decides whether the system lasts.

The surface is cleaned of dirt, chalking and biological growth, and any hollow plaster removed and re-rendered. Cracks are cut and filled and repairs allowed to cure. An alkali-resistant primer is applied, without which the alkalinity of fresh render will saponify the coating and cause it to fail.

How we apply acrylic coating

Step by step, with the specifications each stage is held to.

  1. 01

    Prepare the substrate properly

    Cleaned, hollow plaster removed and re-rendered, cracks filled, repairs cured.

  2. 02

    Prime with an alkali-resistant primer

    Applied to full coverage. Skipping this on an alkaline substrate is a direct cause of early paint failure in Mumbai.

  3. 03

    Apply two topcoats

    Two coats to a combined dry film thickness of 0.15–0.3 mm, respecting the recoat interval between them.

  4. 04

    Check coverage and thickness

    Coverage rate measured against the specification, and dry film thickness checked.

Common failure modes

  • Applied over an unprimed alkaline substrate, where saponification breaks the film down from beneath
  • A single thinned coat spread to cover more area, leaving nothing like the specified film thickness
  • Applied over hollow plaster, so the coating fails with the render it was painted onto
  • Used on an elevation with live hairline cracking, where an elastomeric grade was needed instead
  • Recoat interval ignored, trapping solvent or moisture between coats and blistering the film

When is acrylic coating the wrong choice?

Why does acrylic coating fail when it is done badly?

None of these are material defects — they are execution defects, which is why the same product can last for years on one building and fail in a single monsoon on another.

How do I know the work was done properly?

Ask for evidence against these checkpoints: hollowness tap survey signed off before any coating begins; alkali-resistant primer coverage verified across the full elevation; coverage rate measured against the specified litres per square metre; dry film thickness checked per coat rather than only at completion; recoat intervals logged against ambient conditions on the day. A contractor who cannot produce them is asking you to take execution quality on trust, on work that will be buried under a finish and impossible to inspect afterwards.

How long does acrylic coating last?

Product-specific recoat cycle. We would rather set that expectation honestly than quote a headline number, because the substrate condition and the standard of application matter more to the outcome than the product's own datasheet figure.

What does acrylic coating cost in Mumbai?

Cost depends on area, substrate condition, access, and how much preparation or structural repair is needed before the system can go on. We do not publish a rate per square foot, because a number quoted without seeing the building is either meaningless or misleading. The site inspection is free and produces an itemised scope you can compare against any other quotation.

Which standards apply to acrylic coating?

The relevant Indian Standards for this work are IS 3067. These cover the design, preparatory work and material requirements. Where a project specification names a different or additional standard, we work to the specification.
