Preparation produces nothing visible, costs real money, and is the first thing removed from a cheap quotation. It is also what decides whether the system lasts.
The tank is drained, scrubbed and disinfected. Old lining, scale and loose material are mechanically removed. Cracks are cut and filled and fillets formed at every internal angle. The substrate is brought to the moisture condition the certified lining requires — saturated surface-dry for cementitious systems, thoroughly dry for epoxy.
How we apply food grade coating for water bodies

Verify the certification before anything else
Only a product with current potable-water certification goes inside a drinking-water tank. This is a health requirement and it is checked at specification stage, not assumed from a product name.

Clean and disinfect
Tank drained, scrubbed, old lining removed, and the surface disinfected.

Repair and fillet
Cracks cut and filled and fillets formed at all internal angles, particularly the wall-to-base junction where tanks crack most often.

Apply in multiple coats
Applied in the specified number of coats to 1.5–2.0 mm, cross-directionally where the product allows.

Cure for the full stated period
The full manufacturer's cure period is observed before water goes in. Filling early is the most common shortcut in occupied buildings and it compromises both performance and potable safety.

Flush and test before service
The tank is flushed and, where required, water tested before return to potable service. The certification document is handed over with the project records.
