SBS membrane is a styrene-butadiene-styrene-modified bitumen sheet. The SBS modifier makes it elastomeric, so it stays flexible and recovers after movement better than APP. That makes it the stronger choice where the substrate moves — expansion joints, dynamic details, and structures with thermal cycling — and it is available in torch-applied and self-adhesive grades.

SURFACE PREPARATION

Almost every failure starts here

Preparation produces nothing visible, costs real money, and is the first thing removed from a cheap quotation. It is also what decides whether the system lasts.

As for APP: a sound, clean, dry substrate with laitance removed, cracks cut and filled, and cement fillets at all internal angles. For self-adhesive grades the surface must be genuinely dust-free, because a self-adhesive sheet bonds to whatever is on the surface — and if that is dust, it bonds to dust.

METHOD

How we apply sbs membrane waterproofing

Step by step, with the specifications each stage is held to.

  1. 01

    Prepare and prime

    Substrate cleaned and dried, cracks treated, fillets formed, then primed with a compatible primer allowed to tack off.

  2. 02

    Set out from the low point

    Rolls aligned dry before fixing, laid so laps shed water. Side laps 100 mm, end laps 150 mm, staggered between rolls.

  3. 03

    Apply by torch or self-adhesive

    Torch grades are bonded as for APP with visible bitumen bleed at the seam. Self-adhesive grades are applied by peeling the release film progressively and pressing the sheet down without trapping air.

  4. 04

    Roll every self-adhesive lap

    Self-adhesive laps are pressure-rolled along their full length. Unrolled laps hold air channels that become water paths, and this is the defect that separates a sound self-adhesive installation from a failed one.

  5. 05

    Reinforce the moving details

    An additional ply is applied at movement joints, upturns and complex penetrations. SBS is chosen precisely because it stays elastic and recovers after movement, so the detailing should exploit that rather than ignore it.

  6. 06

    Terminate mechanically

    Upturns carried a minimum of 150 mm and terminated with a bar or batten.

  7. 07

    Probe, test, protect

    Seams probed once cooled or set, then a flood test, then protection board, screed or mineral finish.

Retains flexibility longer than APP in movement-critical locations; exposure without protection remains the limiting factor. We would rather set that expectation honestly than quote a headline number, because the substrate condition and the standard of application matter more to the outcome than the product's own datasheet figure.
