HDPE Membrane Waterproofing in Mumbai

HDPE membrane waterproofing uses a high-density polyethylene sheet, generally pre-applied below rafts and against retaining walls before concrete is poured. The key property is that fresh concrete bonds mechanically to the membrane's coated face, so water cannot track laterally between barrier and structure — the failure mode that defeats most loose-laid below-grade systems.

Waterproofing is a selection problem before it is an application problem. Most failures we are called to fix were the wrong system for the substrate, not a bad product.

SURFACE PREPARATION

Almost every failure starts here

Preparation produces nothing visible, costs real money, and is the first thing removed from a cheap quotation. It is also what decides whether the system lasts.

A level PCC blinding is cast to provide a smooth, clean, dry working base. Protruding aggregate and debris are removed, because anything sharp beneath the sheet becomes a puncture as soon as reinforcement is placed on top. For vertical blind-side application, the shoring face is cleared of loose material and made as regular as the conditions allow.

METHOD

How we apply hdpe membrane waterproofing

Step by step, with the specifications each stage is held to.

  1. 01

    Prepare the blinding

    A level, smooth PCC surface, swept clean. This is the only opportunity to remove puncture risks, because the membrane is buried immediately afterwards.

  2. 02

    Lay coated-face up

    The sheet is laid with its bonding face upward so that concrete cast against it keys mechanically into the coating. Laid the wrong way up, it becomes a loose-laid sheet that water can track behind — which is the failure mode HDPE exists to prevent.

  3. 03

    Seal the laps

    Laps are formed to the manufacturer's stated width and sealed with the matched tape system, with the surfaces wiped clean of site mud first. A lap taped over dirt is not sealed.

  4. 04

    Leave edge projection for the wall connection

    A generous edge is left projecting beyond the raft so the wall membrane can later be lapped and sealed onto it. This junction is what makes the system continuous and it cannot be improvised later.

  5. 05

    Detail pile heads and penetrations

    Pile heads, column starter bars and service penetrations are each individually detailed with preformed collars or the manufacturer's detailing tape.

  6. 06

    Pre-pour walkover

    A full walkover immediately before the pour, repairing every puncture found. Steel fixers and foot traffic damage membranes routinely, and this inspection is the last chance to find it.

  7. 07

    Cast directly against the membrane

    Structural concrete is placed directly onto the sheet so the bond forms. Any protection screed used during steel fixing must be compatible with — and not defeat — that bond, per the manufacturer's system.
