SURFACE PREPARATION

Almost every failure starts here

Preparation produces nothing visible, costs real money, and is the first thing removed from a cheap quotation. It is also what decides whether the system lasts.

The joint is raked out completely — old sealant, hardened mortar, debris and any previous rigid filling removed down to sound joint faces. Both faces are cleaned and, where the sealant requires it, primed. Joint width is measured and the ambient temperature at the time of measurement recorded, since the joint is wider on a cold morning than a hot afternoon.

METHOD

How we apply expansion joint treatment

Step by step, with the specifications each stage is held to.

  1. 01

    Remove any rigid filling

    Mortar packed into an expansion joint is a common and damaging site improvisation. It defeats the joint's purpose and transfers movement into the adjacent structure, cracking it. All of it comes out.

  2. 02

    Measure width and record temperature

    Joint width is temperature-dependent, so the measurement is meaningless without the temperature it was taken at. Both are recorded for sizing the sealant.

  3. 03

    Match movement capability to design movement

    The sealant's stated movement capability must exceed the joint's design movement. Under-specifying here guarantees a tear, usually in the first seasonal cycle.

  4. 04

    Install backer rod

    A closed-cell backer rod sets the correct sealant depth-to-width ratio and, critically, prevents three-sided adhesion. A sealant bonded to the joint base as well as both faces cannot stretch and tears itself apart.

  5. 05

    Prime and apply the sealant

    Faces primed where required, then sealant gunned in and tooled to full contact with both faces and a slight concave profile.

  6. 06

    Bridge or cover where exposed

    Trafficked or weather-exposed joints receive a cover plate or a membrane bridge detail carried through the full build-up.
