SEC. 05 / GROUTING / TAPE BASED TREATMENT

Tape Based Treatment in Mumbai

Tape-based treatment bonds a self-adhesive or reinforced waterproofing tape over a joint, crack or junction to bridge it. It is used for detail work — pipe junctions, wall-floor angles, sheet laps and localised repairs — where a strip of reinforced flexibility is what the detail actually needs.

SELECTION

When this is the right system — and when it is not

Waterproofing is a selection problem before it is an application problem. Most failures we are called to fix were the wrong system for the substrate, not a bad product.

When this is the right choice

  • Wall-to-floor junctions in wet areas
  • Bridging joints between dissimilar materials
  • Localised detail reinforcement within a larger system

When it is not

  • As a whole-area waterproofing system
  • Over dusty, damp or unprimed substrates
BUILD-UP

The system, layer by layer

Every layer has a job. The ones people cut to save money are usually the ones holding the rest together.

  1. L01Substrate preparation

    Clean, dry, primed.

  2. L02Waterproofing tape

Centred over the joint, fully rolled.

  3. L03Encapsulating coat

Coating carried over the tape edges.

SURFACE PREPARATION

Almost every failure starts here

Preparation produces nothing visible, costs real money, and is the first thing removed from a cheap quotation. It is also what decides whether the system lasts.

The substrate either side of the joint is cleaned, dried and primed. This system is entirely dependent on preparation, because a self-adhesive tape bonds to whatever is on the surface — and if that is dust, it bonds to dust and lifts at the edges within weeks.

METHOD

How we apply tape based treatment

Step by step, with the specifications each stage is held to.

  1. 01

    Clean and dry both sides

The full bond width either side of the joint is cleaned back to sound, dust-free substrate.

  2. 02

    Prime

The manufacturer's primer applied to the full bond area and allowed to tack off.

  3. 03

Centre the tape over the joint

Tape laid centrally so the bond width either side is equal and adequate. A tape laid off-centre has insufficient bond on one side and peels from there.

  4. 04

    Roll the full length

Pressure-rolled along its whole length to expel air. Air channels under a tape are continuous water paths, which is exactly what the tape was applied to prevent.

  5. 05

    Encapsulate the edges

The surrounding coating is carried over both tape edges so the tape is sealed into the system rather than sitting on top of it with exposed edges to lift.

MATERIALS

What goes into the system

Tape
Self-adhesive or reinforced waterproofing tape suited to the joint width and the movement expected.
Primer
The tape manufacturer's own primer, which is formulated for that adhesive.
Encapsulating coat
The surrounding membrane or coating, carried over the tape edges.
QUALITY

What goes wrong, and what we check

These are the failure modes we are called in to fix on other people's work. The checkpoints on the right are how we avoid repeating them.

Common failure modes

  • Applied without priming and lifting at the edges
  • Not fully rolled, leaving air
  • Edges not encapsulated by the surrounding coating

Our QC checkpoints

  • Edge adhesion checked
  • Encapsulation continuity verified
QUESTIONS

Tape Based Treatment — questions we get asked

When is tape based treatment the wrong choice?

As a whole-area waterproofing system Over dusty, damp or unprimed substrates Selecting a system that does not match the substrate, the exposure and the movement it will see is the most expensive mistake in waterproofing, because the failure only shows up after everything above it has been built.

Why does tape based treatment fail when it is done badly?

In our experience the recurring causes are: applied without priming and lifting at the edges; not fully rolled, leaving air; edges not encapsulated by the surrounding coating. None of these are material defects — they are execution defects, which is why the same product can last for years on one building and fail in a single monsoon on another.

How do I know the work was done properly?

Ask for evidence against these checkpoints: edge adhesion checked; encapsulation continuity verified. A contractor who cannot produce them is asking you to take execution quality on trust, on work that will be buried under a finish and impossible to inspect afterwards.

How long does tape based treatment last?

Performs as part of the surrounding system. We would rather set that expectation honestly than quote a headline number, because the substrate condition and the standard of application matter more to the outcome than the product's own datasheet figure.

What does tape based treatment cost in Mumbai?

Cost depends on area, substrate condition, access, and how much preparation or structural repair is needed before the system can go on. We do not publish a rate per square foot, because a number quoted without seeing the building is either meaningless or misleading. The site inspection is free and produces an itemised scope you can compare against any other quotation.

Which standards apply to tape based treatment?

The relevant Indian Standards for this work are IS 3067. These cover the design, preparatory work and material requirements. Where a project specification names a different or additional standard, we work to the specification.

Book the inspection. It costs nothing and it settles the argument.

An engineer visits, finds the actual source, and tells you what the building needs and why. You get a clear scope before any money is discussed.
