Swimming Pool Waterproofing in Mumbai
Swimming pool waterproofing lines the pool shell so treated water cannot escape into the structure and so chemically treated water cannot attack the concrete. It must tolerate permanent water immersion, chlorine or salt chemistry, and the movement of a filled and emptied shell, then accept tile or a finish over the top.
When this is the right system — and when it is not
Waterproofing is a selection problem before it is an application problem. Most failures we are called to fix were the wrong system for the substrate, not a bad product.
When this is the right choice
- Pool losing water beyond normal evaporation
- Damp or staining in plant rooms and areas adjacent to the pool shell
- New pool construction or refurbishment before tiling
When it is not
- The loss is through pipework, skimmers or the balance tank — pressure-test the circuit first
- A non-immersion-grade coating is proposed for permanent submersion
The system, layer by layer
Every layer has a job. The ones people cut to save money are usually the ones holding the rest together.
- L01Shell preparation
Cleaned, profiled, fillets formed at all internal angles.
- L02Primer
System-compatible.
- L03Immersion-grade membrane2.0-3.0 mm
Cementitious, PU or polyurea per specification.
- L04Reinforcing fabric at movement details
Corners, junctions, penetrations.
- L05Tile bed and finish
Applied over the cured barrier.
Almost every failure starts here
Preparation produces nothing visible, costs real money, and is the first thing removed from a cheap quotation. It is also what decides whether the system lasts.
The pool is drained and the shell mechanically prepared to remove laitance, old render and any friable material, leaving an open, sound surface. Cracks are cut and filled. Fillets are formed at every internal angle. All fittings — inlets, returns, lights, main drain — are exposed so the barrier can be dressed into each one individually.
How we apply swimming pool waterproofing
Step by step, with the specifications each stage is held to.
- 01
Pressure-test the circuit first
A large share of pool water loss is through pipework, skimmers or the balance tank rather than the shell. The circuit is pressure-tested before the shell is blamed, because relining a sound pool will not stop a leaking return line.
- 02
Prepare and repair the shell
Mechanical preparation, crack cutting and filling, honeycomb repair, and fillets formed at all internal angles.
- 03
Prime
A system-compatible primer applied to the prepared, dry shell at the stated coverage rate.
- 04
Apply an immersion-grade barrier
A membrane rated for permanent immersion is applied to 2.0–3.0 mm. Permanent submersion combined with chlorinated or salt-treated water is a far more aggressive service condition than a terrace, and a general-purpose coating will not survive it.
- 05
Reinforce the movement details
Reinforcing fabric is bedded into the barrier at all corners, junctions, and around every fitting and light niche.
- 06
Fill test with measured drop
The pool is filled and the level measured over 72 hours against an evaporation reference, so the result distinguishes a genuine leak from normal surface loss.
- 07
Tile or finish over a cured barrier
The tile bed is applied only after the barrier has fully cured. Tiling over a green membrane traps solvent or moisture and undermines the bond.
What goes into the system
- Barrier
- Immersion-grade cementitious, polyurethane or polyurea system, selected for chlorine or salt-water chemistry as applicable.
- Reinforcement
- Alkali-resistant fabric at all internal angles, junctions and fittings.
- Fitting seals
- Individual detailing at inlets, returns, main drain and light niches — the recurring leak points in a pool shell.
- Finish
- Tile bed and tiling, or a specified applied finish, over the cured and tested barrier.
What goes wrong, and what we check
These are the failure modes we are called in to fix on other people's work. The checkpoints on the right are how we avoid repeating them.
Common failure modes
- Non-immersion-grade product used under permanent submersion
- Fittings and light niches not individually detailed
- Barrier tiled over before it has fully cured
Our QC checkpoints
- Fill test with measured drop over 72h
- Adhesion testing
- Every penetration detail photographed
Systems often specified alongside this one
- Polyurea Waterproofing
Polyurea is a spray-applied, fast-setting elastomeric coating that gels within seconds and forms a seamless, high-elongation, highly abrasion-resistant membrane.
- FRP Lining Waterproofing
FRP lining waterproofing bonds layers of glass-fibre reinforcement saturated with resin onto a prepared substrate, curing into a hard, seamless, chemically resistant shell.
- Terrace Waterproofing
Terrace waterproofing is the application of a continuous water barrier across a roof slab, laid to a fall so rainwater drains rather than ponds.
- Basement Waterproofing
Basement waterproofing protects a below-grade structure against groundwater under hydrostatic pressure.
- Bathroom Waterproofing
Bathroom waterproofing seals the sunk slab and wet-area walls so water from daily use cannot reach the flat below.
- Toilet Waterproofing
Toilet waterproofing seals the sunken slab, wall skirting and pipe penetrations of a WC area so water cannot migrate into the structure or the flat below.
Swimming Pool Waterproofing across Mumbai
The right specification changes with the locality — coastal chloride exposure, water table, and the age of the building stock all move the answer.

Swimming Pool Waterproofing — questions we get asked
When is swimming pool waterproofing the wrong choice?
The loss is through pipework, skimmers or the balance tank — pressure-test the circuit first A non-immersion-grade coating is proposed for permanent submersion Selecting a system that does not match the substrate, the exposure and the movement it will see is the most expensive mistake in waterproofing, because the failure only shows up after everything above it has been built.
Why does swimming pool waterproofing fail when it is done badly?
In our experience the recurring causes are: non-immersion-grade product used under permanent submersion; fittings and light niches not individually detailed; barrier tiled over before it has fully cured. None of these are material defects — they are execution defects, which is why the same product can last for years on one building and fail in a single monsoon on another.
How do I know the work was done properly?
Ask for evidence against these checkpoints: fill test with measured drop over 72h; adhesion testing; every penetration detail photographed. A contractor who cannot produce them is asking you to take execution quality on trust, on work that will be buried under a finish and impossible to inspect afterwards.
How long does swimming pool waterproofing last?
Governed by water chemistry management and the quality of detailing at inlets, lights and drains. We would rather set that expectation honestly than quote a headline number, because the substrate condition and the standard of application matter more to the outcome than the product's own datasheet figure.
What does swimming pool waterproofing cost in Mumbai?
Cost depends on area, substrate condition, access, and how much preparation or structural repair is needed before the system can go on. We do not publish a rate per square foot, because a number quoted without seeing the building is either meaningless or misleading. The site inspection is free and produces an itemised scope you can compare against any other quotation.
Which standards apply to swimming pool waterproofing?
The relevant Indian Standards for this work are IS 3067. These cover the design, preparatory work and material requirements. Where a project specification names a different or additional standard, we work to the specification.
Book the inspection. It costs nothing and it settles the argument.
An engineer visits, finds the actual source, and tells you what the building needs and why. You get a clear scope before any money is discussed.
