PROBLEM / PLAN IT

China mosaic pieces lifting or coming loose

Loose mosaic pieces mean the bedding mortar has failed or was too thin, and open joints are letting water into the bedding beneath. The mosaic is a protective finish, so losing it exposes the waterproofing below to UV and traffic.

DIAGNOSIS

Probable causes, ranked

Ordered by how often we find each one to be the actual source. The 'tell' is what distinguishes it from the others.

  1. 01most common

Thin or dry bedding mortar with poor adhesion

The tell — Loose pieces come away with almost no mortar attached.

    China Mosaic Waterproofing
  2. 02common

Open or unfilled joints admitting water

The tell — Loosening concentrated around visibly open joints.

    China Mosaic Waterproofing
  3. 03common

Debonded coba moving beneath the finish

The tell — The area also sounds hollow when tapped.

    Brick Bat Coba Waterproofing
  4. 04less common

    Thermal movement with no relief

The tell — Pieces lift along a consistent line.

SELF-CHECK

Sixty seconds, before you call anyone

  • Photograph it while it is actively wet. A dried stain tells a surveyor far less than a running one.
  • Note whether it worsens with rain or with usage. Rain-linked points to the building envelope; usage-linked points to plumbing. This single distinction settles most arguments about responsibility.
  • Check the area directly above and beside the damage, not only below it. Water travels along a slab before it drops.
  • Look specifically for the tell of the most likely cause: loose pieces come away with almost no mortar attached.
  • Do not chip into saturated plaster or paint over a damp patch. The first risks bringing material down; the second destroys the evidence needed to trace the path.
COST OF WAITING

What it becomes if you leave it

Modest if caught early — pieces can be re-laid. Left alone, water enters the bedding and then the coba, and a finish repair becomes a full terrace replacement.

QUESTIONS

China mosaic pieces lifting or coming loose — questions we get asked

What is the most likely cause of china mosaic pieces lifting or coming loose?

Thin or dry bedding mortar with poor adhesion. The sign that points to it is: loose pieces come away with almost no mortar attached. That said, the ranking here is a starting point — the actual source is confirmed by survey, because more than one of these can be true at once.

What happens if I leave it?

Modest if caught early — pieces can be re-laid. Left alone, water enters the bedding and then the coba, and a finish repair becomes a full terrace replacement.

Can I diagnose this myself before calling anyone?

Partly, and it is worth doing. Photograph it while it is actively wet, note whether it worsens with rain or with usage, and check the area directly above and beside the damage. That single rain-versus-usage distinction narrows the cause more than anything else you can do in sixty seconds.
