IPS (Indian Patent Stone)
A cement-concrete topping laid and floated to a hard monolithic surface, typically 25 to 50 mm thick, used as a screed or wearing course.
On an actual building
On a terrace it creates the fall, protects the waterproofing beneath and takes the traffic. Panel joints must be set out before the pour, because the screed will shrink and it will crack somewhere.
What we most often have to correct
That IPS is waterproofing. It is a cementitious topping that cracks; it protects a barrier, it is not one.
